Quinces are in season and we have some lovely, local ones in stock.
Did you know that they are one of the oldest cultivated fruits in the world, treasured since ancient times? Often overlooked today, this golden fruit is packed with goodness and flavour.
Unlike apples or pears, these golden beauties are rarely eaten raw – their magic happens when you cook them. Here's a recipe we think you'll enjoy:
Simple Quince Compote
Perfect for spooning over yogurt, oatmeal, pancakes, or even savoury meats!
Ingredients:
2 quinces, peeled, cored, and sliced
2 cups water
2–3 tbsp honey or sugar (to taste)
1 cinnamon stick
2 cloves (optional)
½ lemon (juice and zest)
Method:
Place quince slices in a saucepan with water, honey/sugar, lemon juice, zest, and spices.
Bring to a boil, then reduce to a gentle simmer.
Cook for 40–50 minutes until the quinces are soft, rosy, and the syrup thickens.
Serve warm or chilled – it keeps beautifully in the fridge for a week!
